Aldi makes big change to meat packaging in UK stores

Aldi is trialling new packaging on its beef mince in some UK stores.

This is to help cut back on the amount of plastic packaging used.

The discount supermarket chain will sell vacuum and flow-wrap packed beef mince.

Not only can this reduce plastic packaging by up to 73 per cent, it can increase the shelf life of the mince.

​The vacuum packaging trial will run in stores in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands and Worcestershire.

The flow-wrap packed packaging will be tested in the same locations in November this year.

The new packaging gets rid of paper lining and it uses no carbon dioxide in production.

This is set to make it more environmentally friendly.

Aldi will review which of the packaging customers prefer before rolling out changes to more locations.

Plastics and packaging director at Aldi Luke Emery said: “At Aldi we are constantly reviewing ways to become more environmentally friendly and reduce plastic where possible.

"These trials promise a range of environmental benefits without affecting quality.

"[They] could lead to significant reductions in plastic, food miles and food waste if rolled out across all stores.”

Earlier this year, Sainsbury's became the first retailer to vacuum pack all of its beef mince.

This packaging change uses a minimum of 55 per cent less plastic.

Lidl also introduced similar packaging to its mince.

This also aimed to cut back on plastic used and it was introduced to stores in June this year.
